About Athens Korean Presbyterian Church

The Athens Korean Presbyterian Church (AKPC) has been serving Koreans and Korean-Americans in Athens, Georgia area since 1983. A few Christian Korean students attending at the University of Georgia made a Korean Bible study group as there was no known such a group in town. Soon after then, Covenant Presbyterian Church in Athens, Georgia became a sponsoring congregation for the Bible study group which presently is the Athens Korean Presbyterian Church. In 1999, AKPC purchased a land in Athens, GA, with a loan through the General Assembly hoping that the Church of God will be built on that land one day. With the prayers, truly sacrificial contributions of many brothers and sisters, grateful helps from Presbyterian Church USA and many others, all of which sorely led by our great God, our church construction could eventually be begun in August, 2007, and beautifully completed in April, 2008.

As of spring 2008, membership of AKPC stands at 150 with an average Sunday attendance of 120. AKPC has Sunday worship service, Wednesday night worship service, and Morning Prayer’s meeting at 6 AM everyday (except for Mondays). AKPC also values and fosters the cell group gatherings. Currently there are six cell groups, meeting every week for several hours mostly on Friday or Saturday night for Bible study and prayer meeting as well as sharing their lives together. AKPC also has established and supported the Athens Korean Language School which has been very successful and is open to the public with no religious discrimination.

Our Mission and Goals

The mission of AKPC is to extend the kingdom of God and be a God’s church that creates and nurtures peace and happiness of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives. We try to make our congregation a community with open arms and open minds focusing on Korean and Korean-American students and residents, by providing them with a spiritual, graceful and culturally comfortable church environment and programs.

Toward our goals, AKPC has made a lot of efforts in reaching the non-Christian Koreans through the proclamation of the gospel by means of nurturing them throughout worship, education, and Christian stewardship in our society. The church serves as a vital place for student and permanent residents originally from Korea. Many members of our church returned to Korea and kept their Christian faith which they began and disciplined through our church. They are now serving as elders, deacons, or active members in many Korean churches as well as the churches in the US. In particular, five alumni of the AKPC are currently serving as pastor in Korea and the US. Central to the vision of AKPC is the evangelization of students, not only to expand the Christian population, but also to generate many Christian leaders influencing Korea and the Korean Society in the US.
